 | START THE JOURNEY: Teacher Leaders & Coaches
Great teaching requires support and critical feedback from collegial coaches. WIDE World helps teachers become coaches who can inspire and lead pedagogical development in their peers. Roll over the elements on the pathway below to reveal the professional development opportunities WIDE World provides for teacher leaders and coaches.

Design
WIDE World develops coaches for its online courses to enable wide-scale change, to develop and sustain an educational community, and to strengthen local capacity for instructional leadership. WIDE World consults with school organizations to identify potential coach candidates among those who have successfully completed two courses on the Teacher Pathway and to design a plan for developing coaches.
Note: WIDE World also develops coaches for roles as face- to-face pedagogical coaches. Please consult with our Educational Planner if you are interested in such specialized work. |

Kickoff
Organizations may arrange for WIDE World to provide an onsite kickoff workshop if large numbers of candidates are beginning this pathway. For example, a kickoff workshop might invite potential coaches such as yourself to reflect on good and bad coaching you have experienced, clarify the dimensions of effective coaching, consider ways of improving examples of pedagogical feedback, and orientate you to the coach development process. |

Learn & Apply
In the four-week online Coach Development course you will review Teaching for Understanding strategies and learn how to apply them to collegial coaching in a WIDE World course. You will practice coaching strategies with an experienced coach and your fellow course participants, learn how to adapt your coaching to learners' level of expertise, and focus on key issues related to your specific course content. |
Refine & Integrate
WIDE World invites successful graduates of its Coach Development course to become Apprentice Coaches. As an Apprentice Coach, you will work with an experienced WIDE World coach in the course for which you prepared. During your apprenticeship, you will observe and develop your skills by coaching a limited number of course participants with supervision from a mentor coach. |
Continue Inquiry & Collaboration
Upon successfully completing the apprenticeship, you may be invited to become a paid coach for WIDE World. As a new coach you will continue to learn by working with a mentor coach and other coaches in the online Coach Forum. The Coach Development process has the added benefit of teaching you to be a more effective onsite coach/mentor in your school/district. |
